When it comes to stinging insects, it can be hard to differentiate between them. After all, they all have a painful sting, they fly around menacingly, and build their homes in the least convenient locations. However, there are some key differences between the three most common types of stinging insects: wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets.

Wasp Nests

Let’s start with wasps. These insects are generally smaller and less hairy than bees, and they build their nests out of paper-like material made from pulp. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times and don’t always lose their stinger, which means they can be even more of a nuisance. Wasps typically build their nests in exposed areas, such as under eaves, in bushes, or in trees.

Hornet Nests

Hornets, on the other hand, are larger than wasps and have a distinct black-and-white coloration. They also build their nests out of a papery material, but their nests are usually much larger than those of wasps. Hornet nests tend to be built in trees, shrubs, or on the sides of buildings.

Yellow Jacket Nests

Last but not least, we have yellow jackets. These are the smallest of the three insects and are often mistaken for bees because of their yellow-and-black coloring. They build their nests out of paper and saliva and tend to build them in enclosed spaces, such as underground or inside walls.

Dangers of Stinging Insects

While all three of these insects can be annoying and painful, hornets and yellow jackets pose the greatest danger because of their aggressive nature. If their nests are disturbed, they will not hesitate to attack in large numbers. Additionally, if you are allergic to their stings, you could have a life-threatening reaction.

If you have a nest on your property, it’s important to take action to remove it. However, it’s equally important to do so safely. DIY removal can be dangerous and should only be attempted if you’re confident in your abilities. Otherwise, it’s best to call a professional, such as us – Eco Pest Control.

While all three of these stinging insects have their unique characteristics, they all have one thing in common: they’re not welcome guests. If you suspect you have a nest on your property, it’s important to take action, but do so safely. Don’t let these insects ruin your summer fun. Contact us for a free inspection.
